Work in Progress

The Concept

The work deals with the notion of Escapism exploring the theme through the perspective of a contemporary individual on a quest for self-identification after a circumstantial experience and its post-traumatic anxieties.

The Process [Che Kevlin]

This project started with my personal interest in the exploration of the concept of ‘freedom’ and the way people relate to this abstract notion depending on their attitudes to the idea of personal space and social circumstance.

After several discussions with students, friends and family, I formulated two main questions to pursue- what does freedom mean to you as an individual?’ and ‘when do you feel most free?’

When I posed these questions to myself I realised that I feel most free when I am creating a new piece of work. I have a great sense of well being while using my body and voice during the process of performing, escaping in this way from the mundane routines and the pressures that modern society tends to bring. The surrounding walls where I rehearse simply disappear and at times I feel transported to a place or state of a heightened awareness.
